It’s amazing the lengths we’ll go to in order to avoid pain. People stay in dead-end marriages, horrible jobs, or feed various addictions for years because that feels more comfortable than facing their seemingly terrifying pain.
Well, fortunately, life sometimes forces us into situations where we have to face our pain. I know it sounds weird to say “fortunately,” but from recent experiences, I can say with great certainty that as challenging as it may be, there is real value in confronting your pain head-on with no distractions.
I’ve been experimenting recently with refusing to give into my usual patterns of isolating or over-working in order to avoid pain, and instead I’ve been boldly welcoming it in.
Oddly enough, this open invitation to my pain is actually making my life easier. Much to my surprise!

Indeed – truly, really, completely owning your pain is no small thing. That’s why so many of us avoid it and instead take a seat on the pleasure train. But there is no replacement for the kind of wisdom, authenticity, and richness that comes from owning your dark side first. It will make the whole ride that much sweeter.
Go for it, and see for yourself!
